The area of the walls directly opposite Wellington Terrace was known as the Saluting Battery. As the name suggests it would have been used to fire salutes to welcome incoming ships but originally it had a much more sinister purpose.

As the Walls were a defensive structure, the canon that were placed in the gaps in the parapet would have been used to defend the town from river borne invaders.
