Cowport is the only gate in Berwick’s Elizabethan Walls to retain its original form. This really makes you appreciate how small the entraces to the town would have been in the past.

Can you imagine if the Scotsgate at the top of Marygate was still this size?

As the name suggests this gate would have been used to take cows and sheep out to graze on the fields to the east of the town (now the golf course)

We know that sheep were still grazing on this land in the 1950s.

Nowadays Cowport gives access from the town to the Bowling Club, Golf Club, Holiday Park and beach.
