Berwick can surely lay claim to having some of the most attractive allotments in the country – there can be few that look so picturesque with the gardens rising up towards the Lions House.

This area has long been used as allotments, as were other parts of the area surrounding the walls. The area of land below Violet Terrace was still being used as allotments in the 1970s.

From the 1760s to the 1930s the Lions Allotments was also home to a ropery or rope walk along the along the rise in the centre of the space. This was demolished around the time of the second world war and turned over to more garden space, probably as part of the dig for victory campaign.  

During the 19th century part of this area was also used as a bowling green and there was even talk at one point in the 1960s of turning the space into a car park - thankfully this did not happen.

As the back of the allotments, where they meet Ravensdowne there is a large ice house which was accessed from the street.
